Archbishop Stepinac High School is an all-boys high school operated by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, located in White Plains, New York. It was founded in 1948 and named for Blessed Aloysius Stepinac, who was archbishop of Zagreb, Croatia at the time.

Stepinac's Past

Archbishop Stepinac High School opened in 1948 with a capacity of 1,360 students. It began with freshman and sophomore years and reached its full complement in 1950. The school was established as the result of the generosity of the Catholic people of Westchester County and the fundraising efforts of the Catholic parishes of Westchester under the leadership of the Archbishop of New York, Francis Cardinal Spellman, and the educational officials of the Archdiocese. The initial purpose of the school was to establish a full educational program with a diversity of subject choices leading to a well-rounded student. In addition to the college prep program. It was hoped that there would be a general course for those who wanted to finish their education with a high school commercial course providing skills for boys entering a trade. It was intended that these goals be achieved for all male student body, taught by an all-male faculty, almost entirely religious in makeup. The administration of the school was in the hands of diocesan priests, assisted by religious brothers and an occasional layman in those early years.

In 2002 it came to light that several of the school administrators from the late 1970's had been either released from the priesthood or relieved of their duties due to accusations that they had solicited or molested youth during their years at Stepinac.

In a series of articles local Westchester newspapers reported that in 1988 Rev. Don Malone, principal at the time, had been picked up by White Plains police for solicting sex from a sixteen year old boy near the Pix Theatre in White Plains. Rev. Malone was immediately removed as principal and moved to another parish. [http://www.bishop-accountability.org/ny-ny/Egan-2002-04-b.htm] Rev. Malone had been known in the school for his in - office wrestling matches with students, donning a cape and cane and marching about the school, and had been nicknamed "Dandy Don Malone".

Similarly in 2002, it came to light that in 1998 the archdiocese had settled a case accusing Rev. William White of molesting one of his students during Rev. White's tenure as Dean of Students in the late 70's. [http://www.bishop-accountability.org/ny-ny/Egan-2002-04-a.htm] . During the 1970's Rev. White, known as "Wee Willie White" among the students, had a reputation for taking underage students out to bars and restaurants for dinner and drinks.

Students from the school were used as extras in the 1972 film "Child's Play" directed by Sidney Lumet.

Stepinac's Present

The current sdministration and faculty of Stepinac is a broad mix of religious (both priests and nuns) and lay men and women. The high school draws its students predominantly from Westchester County and has evolved into a college preparatory school. It is expected that the school community be a fusion of Christian living and academic goals.

Archbishop Stepinac High School is a Roman Catholic secondary school committed to developing in its students a sense of Christian values which will refine their character, their personality, and their devotion to God, to the Church, and to the community in which they live.

The academic program is committed to helping the individual student fulfill his own intellectual potential. Parents, students, faculty and administrators are expected to share, foster and develop these goals.
