Winnebago is a village in Winnebago County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Rockford, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 3,000 at the 2000 census.

History

The community was first settled in 1835. In 1849, the community adopted the name Elida, but later renamed itself Winnebago. Winnebago was incorporated as a village in 1878, having the a population of about 9.

Geography

Winnebago is located at coor dms|42|15|56|N|89|14|26|W|city (42.265652, -89.240548)GR|1.According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.4 square miles (3.6 km²), all of it land.

Winnebago is centered at the intersection of Highways 16 and 49, south of US Route 20.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3000 people, 1,009 households, and 841 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,500 people per square mile (821.6/km²). There were 1,023 housing units at an average density of 735.0/sq mi (284.2/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.14% White, 1.12% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.30% Asian, and 0.41% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.18% of the population.

There were 1,009 households out of which 50.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.9% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 16.6% were non-families. 14.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.93 and the average family size was 3.24.

In the village the population was spread out with 34.3% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $59,891, and the median income for a family was $62,685. Males had a median income of $44,851 versus $25,817 for females. The per capita income for the village was $21,019. About 0.9% of families and 1.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.0% of those under age 18 and 3.9% of those age 65 or over.

Winnebago High School is possibly best known for its storied Cross Country program. The Boys team has won nine IHSA State titles, in 1978, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1991, 1994, 2002, 2005, and 2007. The Girls team has been even more successful, winning the team State championship ten times, a state record. [http://www.ihsa.org/records/titles/w.htm] In addition to this, the track program has also earned rewards for theie girls and boys qualifiers at state several years.

In recent years, the school became recognized for excellence in Boys Basketball as well. The team placed second in the state in 2004 and 2005. Also the team won state titles in 2006 and 2007.

In 2005-06, Winnebago earned its first trip to state in Boys Soccer, losing in the quarterfinals to West Chicago (Wheaton Academy). The loss ended a school record 19 game unbeaten streak that featured the team outscoring its opponents 185-10 and earned the school the Big Northern Conference championship. It earned another trip to the quarterfinals the following year, again losing in the quarterfinals.

In the 2007-2008 boys soccer season 'Bago won 23 games, earned the Big Northern West Conference Championship, won the Hampshire Sectional at Hampshire High School, and was runner up in the IHSA State Class A finals held at North Central College in Naperville, after losing in the Championship game after 4 over time periods (10 minutes each) and a shootout. The number of games won and the finish of runner up in the state championship game were both feats that were unmatched by any other team in the history of the school.

In 2007 the girls bowling team won the IHSA title, led by Ellen Morrison and Chelsea Gilliam.

In 2008 the boys track team brought home the first trophy in the history of the school by placing 3rd in the Team Title.

Academics

Winnebago is also known for its storied history in academic competitions. The Winnebago High School Scholastic Bowl team, led by Hall of Fame coach Karen Niemeier, has won two IHSA State Championships (1993, 1995), one Masonic State title (1994), one National title (1994, The Griffin Experience Scholastic Showdown in St. Louis, now defunct), along with placing third in the IHSA State Finals twice (1994, 2006) and second in the Masonic State Finals once (1993). Winnebago is the only team in IHSA history to defeat The Latin School of Chicago in a State Championship game, having done it to win both the 1993 and 1995 state titles.

The 2005-2006 team, with a record of 71-20, was noted for being the only Class A team to defeat the 2005-06 IHSA Class AA and Masonic State Champion Palatine (Fremd) (62-4 record) and the only Class A team and one of only four teams to defeat IHSA Class AA third place finisher Rockford (Auburn) (86-5 record).
