USS America (LHA-6)

The USS "America" (LHA-6) will be the first of the "America" class amphibious assault ships, which will replace the "Tarawa" class. [ [http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=38154 Navy Names New Amphibious Assault Ship] ] Based on the USS "Makin Island" (LHD-8), the "America" will be a gas-turbine powered ship supporting a Marine Expeditionary Brigade with the capacity for V-22 Osprey tilt-rotors, helicopters, and F-35B V/STOL strike fighters. The ship is due to be delivered to the Navy in 2012. At displacement of 45,000 tons, and carrying a complement of strike fighters, it can serve in the small carrier role, as demonstrated by LHD operations in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
