Alan Thompson (canoer)

Alan Thompson (born 14 June, 1959 in Gisborne, New Zealand) is a double Olympic Gold medallist in canoeing (kayak) events.

He was selected for the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow and was one of 4 athletes, 3 of them canoeists, who competed for New Zealand despite the boycott.

In the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, 1984 he won gold medals in the K1 1000m and K4 1000m (with Grant Bramwell, Ian Ferguson and Paul MacDonald). He also competed in the K1 1000m at the 1988 Summer Olympics held in Seoul, Korea finishing 6th in the final.

After retiring from top-level canoeing Thompson became a coach, selector and manager for New Zealand canoeing teams and eventually became president of the New Zealand Canoeing Federation.
