The school was founded as the 'Athénée Royal' in 1817, although the preceding school had been founded as a Jesuit college in 1603.

Since 1963, the school has been located in Hollerich, in the south-west of the city. Until 1963, it had been located in the city Athenaeum (hence the name), now the site of the National Library, in Ville Haute.
