Chicago Statement on Biblical Hermeneutics

Chicago Statement on Biblical Hermeneutics

The Chicago Statement on Biblical Hermeneutics was composed at Summit I of the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy. The summit took place in Chicago on October 26–28, 1978 for the purpose of affirming afresh the doctrine of the inerrancy of Scripture, making clear the understanding of it and warning against its denial.

Participants agreed that belief in the inerrancy of Scripture is basic, but valuable only as one's understanding of the meaning of Scripture. Summit II was held in Chicago on November 10–13, 1982. A consensus statement of approximately one hundred participants and observers was formulated.[1]
