Streamwood is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 39,497 at the 2006 census. It is a suburb of Chicago.

Citizens' income varies from upper middle-class to low-income working class. The western section of the village includes affluent neighborhoods and wealthy unincorporated neighborhoods to the far west. The unincorporated neighborhoods' children attend Streamwood schools. The majority of the upper-tier subdivisions are located on the western side of Illinois Route 59, formerly Sutton Road. There are low-income apartment blocks at the deep south border off of Lake Street, which are home to the majority of the village's immigrants and less affluent residents.

Streamwood, along with Bartlett and Hanover Park, is one of the three communities that make up the so called "Tri Village" area. Streamwood was first incorporated as a village on February 9, 1957.

Retail and Commerce

A major retail sector has developed in recent years at the intersection of Route 59 and Irving Park Road called Sutton Park. Stores and businesses include:

Other stores around the Route 59 and Irving Park Road intersection include,Bank of America, 5/3 Bank, CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks Coffee, Sprint, US Cellular, Taco Bell, Dunkin Donuts, Shell, UPS Store, T Mobile, Pearle Vision, Jimmy Johns, Arby's, Steak N Shake, Subway, and other assorted shops.

Another retail area is located off of Irving Park Road near Park Boulevard called Woodland Heights Shopping Center. Stores and businesses include Jewel Osco, Hollywood Video, Rent-a-Center, Burger King, Murray's Auto Parts, Discovery Clothing Company, Walgreens, H&R Block, Snap Fitness, and other assorted shops.

Other retail establishments are located on the western side of Barrington Road, between Irving Park and Schaumburg Roads.

Park District

The village has an award winning park district, with numerous recreation centers and parks. The newer subdivisions and neighborhoods tend to have more parks, but the village has done well with overall distribution. Park Place is a major recreation center, with an indoor waterpark, fitness center, daycare, gymnasium, running track, and meeting rooms. Rahlf's Woods, Dolphin Park, and Hoosier Grove are the villages premier baseball/softball parks, hosting numerous sporting events. Hoosier Grove is also home to many soccer fields, the Streamwood Heritage Museum, "The Barn" banquet center, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and a large playground. The new Sunnyhill Park opened in 2007 in the center of the new and upper-income neighborhoods on the far west side of the village. The park includes a skatepark, a frisbee course, three gazebos, two playgrounds, tennis courts, an interactive water/splash pad, and numerous sitting areas. Walking paths weave throughout the area.

The Roller Rink

Known throughout the area is the Streamwood Roller Rink. Located in the older section of town off of Bartlett Road, the Roller Rink is a hotspot for local kids.

Streamwood is located at coor dms|42|1|14|N|88|10|24|W|city (42.020627, -88.173409)GR|1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.3 square miles (19.0 km²), of which, 7.3 square miles (18.9 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.41%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2006, there were 39,497 people, 12,095 households, and 9,409 families residing in the village. The population density was 4,989.0 people per square mile (1,925.6/km²). There were 12,371 housing units at an average density of 1,695.3/sq mi (654.3/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 78.53% White, 2.84% African American, 0.29% Native American, 8.64% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 7.06% from other races, and 2.61% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.78% of the population.

There were 12,095 households out of which 40.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-families. 17.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.99 and the average family size was 3.41.

In the village the population was spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 37.3% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 6.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 100.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.3 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $68,076, and the median income for a family was $72,771. Males had a median income of $43,699 versus $32,826 for females. The per capita income for the village was $23,961. About 2.3% of families and 3.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.2% of those under age 18 and 4.4% of those age 65 or over.

The village is primarily served by a unified school district, Elgin Area School District U-46, the second largest school district in Illinois. U-46 provides educational services to nearly 40,000 students in area of approximately 90 square miles in Cook, DuPage and Kane Counties. A small subdivision east of Barrington Road is served by School District 54 (Kindergarten through Junior High) and Township District 211 (High school.) The village is also served by and falls "entirely" within the boundaries of the Elgin Community College District.

In addition to public schools, the village is also one of the locations of Northwest Academy, is private therapeutic day school serving special education students from school districts within a 50-mile radius.

treamwood Stride

The Streamwood Stride is an endurance race. It is held in Streamwood, IL in the second weekend of June. The 2008 Streamwood Stride was its 10th race, and included the 5k run/walk, the 10k run, kiddie races of 50m and 100m, the double derby (which is Streamwood Stride teamed up with Bartlett Blossom Run), and the 1 mile fun run.
