List of The Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Characters

"Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." was a show on CBS from 1964 - 1969. It was about a young unintelligent man who worked in a gas station named Gomer Pyle. He was from Mayberry, North Carolina. He decided to join the United States Marine Corps eventually. While serving in the corps he met some recruits, fellow enlisted Marines, and officers at training. Here are the characters of the show.

ergeant Carter

Gunnery Sergeant Vince Carter is Gomer's obnoxious, yet soft at heart, drill instructor. Carter takes his role very seriously, as evidenced by the stripes he's earned over the years. Carter is forever exasperated by the ineptitude of his eager protege, Gomer, and would like nothing better than to see Gomer transferred.

Corporal Gilbert 'Duke' Slater

* Acted by Ronnie Schell
Corporal Gilbert Slater better known as 'Duke', is Gomer's best friend in the marines. Unlike Gomer, he has few scruples and is not above putting one over on Sergeant Carter, much to the consternation of Gomer. Eventually, Duke attains the rank of Corporal.

Corporal Chuck Boyle

Corporal Chuck Boyle works under Sergeant Carter. Boyle usually serves as Carter's conscience, reminding Carter to treat Gomer civily, even if it means that Gomer will continue under his beloved Sergeant. Gomer never realizes it but Boyle, many times, serves as his advocate.

Lou-Ann Poovie

* Acted by Elizabeth MacRaeLou-Ann Poovie is Gomer's girlfriend throughout most of the series. She is from North Carolina as well, and a sweet, somewhat naive, but always willing partner to Gomer's mis-adventures. Although very interested in music (she came to California for a music career), she is considered tone-deaf

ergeant Whipple

Sergeant Whipple was born sometime in the 1920s or 1930s. Sergeant Whipple and Sergeant Carter dislike each other and are competitive sometimes. In the episode "Private Ralph Skunk" it shows Sergeant Carter and Sergeant Whipple's competitivity and dislike toward each other.

Staff Sergeant Hacker runs the company mess hall; Sergeant Hacker and Sergeant Carter are mortal foes; in one classic episode Hacker and Carter are nearly driven crazy when just before mess call, they have to search 600 bread loafs after Pyle drops a wedding ring into the dough!

Lieutenant Colonel Edward Gray

Lieutenant Colonel Edward Gray was born in 1925. He was the officer in charge of the base on the show Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.. He served at the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II in 1945.

Private Frankie Lombardi
