Jacques-Cartier (Longueuil)

Jacques-Cartier was the name of a former city located on the south shore of Montreal, Quebec, Canada. It merged with the city of Longueuil in 1969. It was named after the founder of New France, Jacques Cartier.

History

Created at the same time as Mackayville in 1947, its land came from the St-Antoine de Longueuil Parish. The town grew extremely quickly, much too fast for its existing infrastructure. It lacked a sewer system and paved roads. Dogs ran wildly in the streets. Houses were built as soon as the owner had the materials required to make one. The city had little or no laws on architectural integrity. This led to a mismash of buildings, some of concrete, some of wood, some of brick, along its streets. It was known as the Wild West of Quebec. The territory it occupied was four times larger than the territory occupied by the original city of Longueuil. Religion
Ville Jacques-Cartier was overwhelmingly Franco-catholic. It had twelve catholic parishes at the time of its merger with Longueuil in 1969. The clergy played a large role in the success of the community. It ran various social organizations, and was in charge of education in the city. Front de Libération du Québec

The Chénier Cell of the Front de Libération du Québec terrorist group was based in Ville Jacques-Cartier. The cell's members were either born or raised in the former city.
