Flagler Beach is a city in Flagler County, Florida, United States. The population was 4,954 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 5,228. [ [http://www.census.gov/popest/cities/tables/SUB-EST2004-04-12.xls] ]

Geography

Flagler Beach is located at coor dms|29|28|27|N|81|7|37|W (29.474079, -81.126987).GR|1

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.6 km² (4.1 mi²). 9.5 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.0 km² (0.4 mi²) of it (9.80%) is water.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 4,954 people, 2,535 households, and 1,493 families residing in the city. The population density was 519.8/km² (1,345.1/mi²). There were 3,224 housing units at an average density of 338.3/km² (875.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.86% White, 0.52% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.67% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.84% of the population.

There were 2,535 households out of which 12.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% were married couples living together, 6.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% were non-families. 33.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.95 and the average family size was 2.43.

In the city the population was spread out with 11.5% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 20.0% from 25 to 44, 32.5% from 45 to 64, and 31.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 53 years. For every 100 females there were 92.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $47,073. Males had a median income of $31,848 versus $30,132 for females. The per capita income for the city was $24,600. About 9.0% of families and 10.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.4% of those under age 18 and 10.4% of those age 65 or over.

National exposure

To Catch a Predator is a reality television show that features a series of hidden camera investigations by the television newsmagazine, Dateline NBC devoted to the subject of identifying and detaining potential child sexual abusers who contact minors (or individuals whom they believe to be minors) over the Internet for sexual liaisons. In December 2006, the group Perverted-Justice worked with the police department in Flagler Beach to arrest 21 men over four days, and the sting was filmed again by "Dateline". The story was aired February 27 and March 6, 2007, and resulted in 21 guilty pleas. One of those arrested was a resident of Flagler Beach.
