Bloomfield is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 19,587 at the 2000 census.

Geography

, the town has a total area of 26.2 square miles (67.8 km²), of which 26.0 sq mi (67.4 km²) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.4 km² or 0.61%) is water.

Bloomfield is bordered by Windsor to the east, East Granby to the north, Simsbury and Avon to the west, and West Hartford and Hartford to the south.

The northern border of Bloomfield is formed by the Farmington River.The west side is flanked by Talcott Mountain, part of the Metacomet Ridge, a mountainous traprock ridgeline that stretches from Long Island Sound to nearly the Vermont border. Notable features of the Metacomet Ridge in Simsbury include Penwood State Park and the Tariffville Gorge of the Farmington River. The convert|51|mi|adj=on Metacomet Trail traverses the ridge.

Demographics

As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 19,587 people, 7,902 households, and 5,152 families residing in the town. The population density was 753.0 people per square mile (290.8/km²). There were 8,195 housing units at an average density of 315.0/sq mi (121.6/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 40.00% White, 54.06% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.29% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.60% from other races, and 2.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.67% of the population.

There were 7,902 households out of which 24.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.1% were married couples living together, 15.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.8% were non-families. 30.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.

In the town the population was spread out with 21.4% under the age of 18, 5.8% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 26.6% from 45 to 64, and 21.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 81.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 75.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $53,812, and the median income for a family was $64,892. Males had a median income of $42,860 versus $36,778 for females. The per capita income for the town was $28,843. About 5.1% of families and 7.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 9.4% of those age 65 or over.

Schools

Big Picture High School is an inter-district magnet school opened in August 2005. In the 2006-2007 school year it accommodated students in grades 9 and 10 and is expanding to grade 12 in 2008-2009. The capacity is approximately 130 students.
