Tukituki (New Zealand electorate)

Tukituki (New Zealand electorate)

Tukituki is a New Zealand Parliamentary electorate, returning one Member of Parliament to the New Zealand House of Representatives. The current MP for Tukituki is Craig Foss of the National Party. [ [http://www.parliament.nz/en-NZ/MPP/MPs/MPs/8/7/c/48MP127331-Foss-Craig.htm New Zealand Parliament - Craig Foss MP] ] He has held this position since 2005.

Tukituki is based around the southern Hawke's Bay region, with the bulk of the seat's population coming from the city of Hastings, with other towns drafted in to bring the seat up to the required population. In its current boundaries, these include Waipukurau and Waipawa, but a general northwards tug on boundaries in the Taranaki, Manawatu-Wanganui and Hawke's Bay regions will see these towns moved into the Wairarapa seat, in exchange for which Tukituki will gain the suburbs and towns around Cape Kidnappers from the seat of Napier.

History

Tukituki was created ahead of the change to Mixed Member Proportional voting at the 1996 election; it is a merger of the old Hastings seat with Central Hawke's Bay District. Labour's Rick Barker, who had represented Hastings since 1993 was elected as MP for Tukituki, and re-elected twice before a large provincial swing to the National Party in 2005 cost Barker his seat. This was the second time in over thirty years that a seat based around Hastings had elected a National MP - the other two times being National's landslide victories in 1975 and 1990.
