Daljit Singh Shergill

Daljit Singh Shergill is the President of Guru Nanak Gurdwara Smethwick and one of the main organisers in the UK for Sikh events. As a Sikh Leader in UK, He is also the longest leading President of the 1st Gurdwara in the UK. Since then he has led a very successful Sikh life, becoming president of the Smethwick Gurdwara in 1984 where he still is Chairman of the council of Sandwell Sikh Gurdwara’s in UK, Chairman of the national Sikh Gurdwaras, Chairman of the SYCC (Smethwick Youth Community Centre) and President of the Sikh Welfare association in the UK.

The descendants of Shergill, one of the eight sons of the Great Gillpal, settled in the Zira area located in Malwa and gave rise to the elite Shergill (i.e. Singh Gill) Jat clan of the Punjab. Another notable Shergill is Balkar Shergill, who is a descendent of Bhagat Singh.

There are two villages of Shergills in district Patiala (i.e pind Behal and Majaal-Khurd). Behal village is located on the Patiala-Pehowa road and Majaal-Khurd is on the west of Behal. Sardar Charanjit Singh Shergill (1905-1997) of the Behal village, south of Patialla, was a prominent figure in the area. Shergills are also found in nearby Mehmudpur and Khansian villages. There are eight villages near Banga in District Nawanshahr where Shergills reside. These are Raipur Dabba, Mukandpur, Jagatpur [Jhingran], Dyalpur, Bahua and Chak Bilgan etc. There are some villages of Shergills in Nurpur Bedi Block in Ropar i.e. Abiana, Leharian, Rampur Bela, Bhatton, Bains,Aaulakh & many more. In Amritsar district, the famous village [Baserke Gillan] is also the birthplace of the third Guru of Sikhs, Guru Amar Das Ji. In Sangrur district of Punjab there are three famous villages of Shergills Which Sardar Daljit Singh Shergill belongs to Jamsher Khera others are ,Rajomajra and Moranwali). Jallandhar/Nawan Shehar district is Langeri.

On the day of Baisakhi, 29 March 1748, the Sikhs gathered at Amritsar to celebrate the festival. A Sarbat Khalsa (a general assembly of the Sikhs) was convened which decided to offer organized resistance to Mughal oppression, and the entire fighting force of the Khalsa was unified into a single body called the Dal Khalsa, under the supreme command of Sardar Jassa Singh Ahluwalia. The 65 bands of fighters were grouped into 11 Misls or divisions each under its own sardar or chief having a separate name and banner as follows: (1) Ahluwalia Misl under Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, (2) Singhpuria Misl(also called Faizulapuria) under Nawab Kapur Singh, (3) Karorsinghia Misl under Karora Singh, (4) Nishanarivali Misl under Dasaundha Singh Shergill, (5) Shahid Misl under Baba Deep Singh, (6) Dallevalia misl under Gulab Singh, (7) Sukkarchakkia Misl under Charhat Singh, (8) Bhangi Misl under Hari Singh Dhillon, (9) Kanhaiya Misl under Jai Singh, (10) Nakai Misl under Hira Singh, (11) Ramgarhia Misl under Jassa Singh Ramgarhia. Jassa Singh Ahluwalia chosen to be in joint command of the entire Dal Khalsa, while Nawab Kapur Singh continued to be acknowledged as the supreme commander. Phulkiari under Baba Ala Singh of Patiala was the twelfth misl, but it was not part of the Dal Khalsa command.
