The Blue Buffalo Company is a maker of natural food for dogs and cats manufactured in the United States by The Blue Buffalo Company of Wilton, Connecticut.

Blue Buffalo also referred to as "Blue" is a family owned company and was created as a result of the owners' Airedale, Blue, contracting cancer. A formula was developed with human grade ingredients such as real chicken, whole grains, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, and a blend of nutrients and antioxidants. Ingredients

Blue Buffalo uses ingredients such as whole ground brown rice, whole ground barley, rye, oatmeal, potato flour, tomato pomace, whole carrots, whole sweet potatoes, ground flaxseed, alfalfa, herring oil, sea salt, menhaden fish meal, and barley grass. The company does not use animal by-products, corn, wheat, or soy as do many other holistic or natural food manufacturers. The cold forming process is what makes the life source bit. If you bake a food, you bake all the necessary nutrients right out of it. That's why Blue uses the cold forming process.

Recalls

On April 19, 2007 The Blue Buffalo Company announced a voluntary recall of one production run of its Spa Select Kitten dry food because the rice protein concentrate used for this particular production run was obtained from Wilbur-Ellis by their manufacturing partner and tested positive for melamine. [ [http://bluebuff.com/news/news-070419.shtml Blue Buffalo news release] ]

On April 27, 2007 the company issued a nationwide recall of all canned dog foods sold under its "BLUE" dog food brand, all canned cat food sold under its "BLUE Spa Select" cat food brand, and all dog treats sold under its "BLUE" dog food brand after the FDA confirmed the presence of melamine. The melamine came from rice protein obtained from Wilber-Ellis. The Blue Buffalo Company claims that manufacturer American Nutrition included the rice protein without the company's "knowledge or consent." [ [http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/bluebuffalo304_07.html FDA Recalls] ] It subsequently removed all products made by American Nutrition regardless of whether or not they tested for melamine. In response to accusations by Blue Buffalo and other customers, ANI issued a press release denying any deliberate or intentionally wrongful conduct claiming "customers specifically required rice-based formulations".
