List of amphibia of Bulgaria

There are 17 amphibia species that inhabit the territory of Bulgaria. They include 12 frog species from five families and 5 salamander species from the family Salamandridae. The most recently discoverred species is the Edible Frog which was first registered in 1966. Some of the most common species include the European Green Toad, Yellow-bellied toad and Marsh Frog.

*Family BombinatoridaeBombinatoridae is an Old World toad family often referred to as Fire-bellied toads because of their brightly colored ventral sides which show that they are highly toxic. It includes two genera, Barbourula and Bombina, both of which have flattened bodies. *Family BufonidaeBufonidae is a family of toads spread in the whole world with the exception of Australia and the islands in the Indian Ocean. The family includes 36 genera, only one of which is represented in Bulgaria.:*Genus BufoBufo is a large genus with around 250 species, two of which can be found in the territory of the country. *Family HylidaeHylidae or Tree Frogs is a large family with around 49 genera in 6 subfamilies spread throughout all continents with the exception of Antarctica. They usually inhabit tropical areas with warm and humid climate. *Family PelobatidaePelobatidae is a small family of frogs with only one genus and four species spread in Europe and Western Asia, two of which inhabit the territory of the country.

Order Caudata (Salamanders)

*Family SalamandridaeSalamandridae is a family which consists of True Salamanders and Newts which inhabit the Northern Hemisphere. There are currently 20 genera with 74 species; of them two genera and five species can be observed in the country.:*Genus SalamandraSalamandra is a family of small tailed amphibia.
