Mughalsarai is a city and a municipal board in Chandauli district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Located around 10 km from Varanasi, it is an important railway junction of the Indian Railways. Once, it enjoyed the position of the largest railway marshalling yard of Asia. The Grand Chord section, which starts from Asansol, West Bengal, terminates at Mughalsarai.

Lal Bahadur Shastri, former Prime Minister of India during 1964-1965, was born in Mughalsarai.

Demographics

In 2001 India census,[1] Mughalsarai had a population of 88,386. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Mughalsarai has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 73%, and female literacy is 55%. In Mughalsarai, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. Mughalsarai Railway Settlement was considered as a separate entity in 2001 Census.

In 2001 India census, whole Mughalsarai tahshil had a population of 116,246. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Mughalsarai has an average literacy rate of 68%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 76%, and female literacy is 59%. In Mughalsarai, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Colonies

Mughalsarai is bifurcated by G T Road in two parts. The northern part mainly consists of Railway colonies like European Colony (Vasant Vihar), Diesel Colony, Haper Colony, Loco Colony and Roza Colony and the southern part consists of residential areas like Galla Mandi,Eastern Bazar,Kasab Mohal,Western Bazar, New Mahal, Lot no. 2, Hanumanpur, Ravi Nagar and Kailashpuri and some railways colonies like Shashtri Colony, Manas nagar colony, kurhkala and R.P.F. Colony, Gaya Colony [Dheeraj] . Kailashpuri is considered as the poshest colony of Mughalsarai.

Railways

Mughalsarai is most famous for its railway yard and its railway colonies. There are about 16 railway colonies. Mughalsarai Railway Division belongs to East Central Railway (ECR) Zone of the Indian Railway. About 125+ passenger trains pass from Mughalsarai Junction. The Divisional Rail Manager (DRM) office of Mughalsarai Division is situated here. At Mughalsarai Junction, two most important railway lines meet 1) Main Line (Delhi-Kanpur-Allahabad-Patna-Gaya-Howrah) and 2) Detour Line (Delhi-Moradabad-Bareilly-Lucknow-Varanasi-Gaya-Howrah).

Varanasi City is 16 KM from Mughalsarai Railway Station via GT Road. The Malviya Bridge (Lord Duffrin Bridge Double Deck Rail cum Road, Built in 1888 A.D.) in Kashi (Varanasi) is situated between Mughalsarai and Varanasi on the river Ganga. Yard of Mughalsarai Railway Junction is longest Railway freight yard in India and 2nd longest in Asia.

Road

Mughal Sarai is on National Highway No.2. which is known as Grand Trunk Road made by emperor Sher Shah Suri. Sher Shah Suri had named this road as Sadak-e-Azam. In ancient times this road was known as Uttarapath. Jarasandh adopted this very route to attack Mathura under the Kingship of Lord Krishna. Mughalsarai is located 667 km far from Kolkata by road.

Places

There is a Kali Mata temple situated near the station on GT road.It's a very old and well known temple. The old railway school of mughalsarai has the body of crashed Indian fighter Aircraft MIG-21,which was given by a Chief Air Marshal of the Indian Air Force who was born in Mughalsarai as a token of respect to the former prime minister of India Lal Bahadur Shastri. The view of Indian Railways near Sikline i.e at the end of mughalsarai yard is also admirable.

While Graduate and Post Graduate Degree Colleges like Lal Bahadur Shastri College and Vikram Singh Kanya Mahavidyalay, Women PG College are affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth, Varanasi(U.P).Mughalsarai has also a institute which name is MADARSA ISLAMIYA IRFAN-UL-ULUM.

Sports

Mughalsarai has three Sports grounds & one Railway stadium, Loco colony sports ground, ECR Inter college ground and famous Barclay club sports ground (The British time Club building). Sareser field [on bebhag].
