Canadian Geographic

"Canadian Geographic" is the bimonthly magazine of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society (RCGS). It was first published in May 1930 under the name "Canadian Geographical Journal". The society's objective was to produce a popular magazine dealing primarily with Canadian geography. The first editor was Charles Camsell, since 1915 a fellow of the British Royal Geographical Society, a geologist who had been responsible for mapping large parts of Northern Ontario, Manitoba and the Yukon.

Typically, the magazine contains articles on physical, historical, political and environmental geography, illustrated with photographs and maps (averaging two illustrations per page). It has recent published articles on subjects of modern controversy, such as acid rain, clear-cut logging, vanishing wetlands, and pollution of the Great Lakes. Readers' letters deal mainly with geography and the natural sciences.

The magazine's website contains substantial extracts from current articles and supplementary information not published in the print edition.

In 2002 the magazine established the Canadian Environment Awards program in partnership with the government and private companies.

The circulation in 2004 was about 220,000 copies per issue. It is published six times per year.
