Aasmah Mir

Aasmah Mir (born 7 October 1971) is a BBC presenter. Mir was brought up in Glasgow and she graduated from the University of Bristol with an honours law degree in 1993.

Mir presents the Midday News on BBC’s Radio Five Live, Monday to Friday, 12.00-1.00pm. She began her career in broadcasting aged 21 as one of the early morning shift news bulletin readers for Scottish Television, also presented the main news show.

In 1995 she had a brief stint as a reporter for the "Daily Record" and "Sunday Mail", then became a radio researcher. She presented a couple of editions of the documentary strand for BBC TWO called "East" in 1996. She presented ethnic programmes at BBC Radio Scotland for two years, leaving in 1998 to become a reporter for Central TV in Nottingham. In 1999, Mir moved to London as a producer for BBC GLR (now BBC London) and started doing freelance newsreading shifts for Five Live. She joined the station full-time in July 2001.

In April 2006 she covered on the BBC Asian Network on the weekday morning phone in programme for a fortnight at a time when Sonia Deol had left the programme, before Anita Rani became presenter. She was also a columnist for the Sunday Herald, has presented items on the BBC Asian Network Report and has presented some items on Desi DNA

She is a supporter of Celtic F.C. and describes her worst job as cleaning the toilets in a Glasgow fish and chip shop.
