Karsten Schubert

Karsten Schubert is a German-born artist's representative and gallery owner, working in the United Kingdom.

Life and career

Karsten Schubert (born in West Berlin in 1961) (initially in collaboration and with the backing of Richard Salmon) ran Karsten Schubert Limited from 1986 to 1991. His 1988 group show of Ian Davenport, Gary Hume and Michael Landy kicked off the YBA phenomenon. The gallery quickly came to represent the leading young British artists of their generation, including Glenn Brown, Angus Fairhurst, Anya Gallaccio, Gary Hume, Michael Landy and Rachel Whiteread, aside from Europeans (Thomas Gruenfeld, Martin Kippenberger) and Americans (Stephen Prina and Ed Ruscha). The gallery was also the agent for Bob Law, Bridget Riley and Alison Wilding. In addition to an exhibition programme, the gallery published a series of catalogues and books, including 'Technique Anglaise' (1989) which provided a first overview of the YBA scene and became an important source of information for curators and collectors. The partnership with Richard Salmon came to end during the early 1990s recession. The gallery relocated from Charlotte Street to smaller premises in Foley Street, continuing its exhibition and publishing programme. The gallery was also actively involved with off-site projects, including Michael Landy's 'Scrapheap Services' (1996) and the public battle for Rachel Whiteread's 'House'(1994). In 1995 Charles Asprey, Thomas Dane and Karsten Schubert established Ridinghouse.

Rachel Whiteread's 1996 departure from the galery triggered a reorientation of activities. Karsten Schubert became a private dealer (primarily looking after Bridget Riley and Alison Wilding), writer ('The Curator's Egg' was published in 1999) and publisher (under the Ridinghouse imprint). He regularly contributes to The Burlington Magazine. In 2007 he moved to premises at Golden Square in Soho (London). A focused exhibition programme has so far presented the work of E W Nay, Georg Baselitz and John Stezaker (in collboration with The approach). Ridinghouse publishes up to ten scholarly catalogues and books per year. Karsten Schubert is a trustee of Space Studios (London.
