Warrior is a city in Jefferson County in the U.S. state of Alabama. At the 2000 census the population was 3,169.


The community was named for the Warrior Coal Fields, which opened in 1872. Its name was originally Warrior Station.

The current mayor of Warrior is Rena Hudson.

Warrior is also home of the 1992/1993 Class 2A (AHSAA) Basketball Championship. Warrior High School is now closed, but when it was opened it was home of the Indians.

Warrior is the northernmost city in Jefferson County. Jefferson County is the home of Birmingham, Alabama. The state's most populated city.

Warrior is home of Rickwood Caverns State Park, which is a beautiful state park in Alabama. Featuring 260 million-year-old limestone formations, blind cave fish, and an underground pool, Rickwood Caverns is a recognized member of the National Caves Association, and offers more than a mile of living geology.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.9 square miles (20.4 km²), all of it land.


As of the censusGR|2 of 2000, there were 3,169 people, 1,302 households, and 898 families residing in the city. The population density was 402.2 people per square mile (155.3/km²). There were 1,439 housing units at an average density of 182.6/sq mi (70.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 83.21% White, 15.40% Black or African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.16% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.32% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,302 households out of which 28.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were married couples living together, 16.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were non-families. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.1% had someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the city the population was spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 87.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $28,143, and the median income for a family was $35,697. Males have a median income of $32,306 versus $20,486 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,919. 11.0% of the population and 12.1% of families were below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.9% of those under the age of 18 and 13.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
