"Dark Celebration" is the seventeenth title in Christine Feehan’s Dark Series, a series of paranormal/romances featuring the Carpathians.

Plot introduction

The Carpathians for years have been persecuted by their enemies, and have struggled against all odds to preserve their species. Now, a new insidious plot has been devised-one that would slaughter Carpathian females and bring an end to all that the Carpathians have worked for. Even with his own lifemate, Raven, and their daughter Savannah, in danger, Carpathian Prince Mikhail Dubrinsky believes that all is not lost. Mikhail sends out a call to all of his people to return to their native homeland, the Carpathian Mountains in the hopes of combating the dangers to their lives and the survival of their people.

The prince's wife, Raven, who was a mere human before being converted to a Carpathian (with some resultant powers, the philosophy and responsibilities that go along with that), decides that she wants to hold what is, for her and many of the other spouses ("lifemates" in Carpathian terminology), an old-fashioned Christmas party and reunion. So Carpathians from all over the world gather in their beloved homeland Carpathian Mountains, but to celebrate Christmas in a traditional "human" way, with a feast of human food (that the Carpathians don't eat), a pageant for the children, and even a visit from St. Nick!

The book introduces a new 'couple': Dimitri and his lifemate Skyler (though Dimitri does not bind her to him with the ritual words. She is considered too young and too fragile emotionally to be able to cope with a lifemate at this point). Look for many of the woman to become pregnant thanks to Syndil’s ability to heal the earth.

There are a few appendices in the back explaining the Carpathian language, healing chants of the Carpathians, and even "Dark Desserts", recipes for what sound like delicious and dangerous goodies for Christmas or any celebration.
