Motocross training

Motocross training is the combination of practicing the sport of motocross, exercising to build strength and endurance in the muscles used in the sport, nutrition that is needed to fuel the human body for optimum performance in the sport, and mental preparation. Until recently, it was thought that simply through practicing riding one could gain the skills needed to compete at the top level. However, thanks to pioneers such as Armand Johanson, Seth Perry, and Greg Hopensburg it has been shown that it is the combination of all four areas that can be the key to success.

There is no substitute for time on the motorcycle but this time can be much more effective through a systematic training approach that includes the repetitive practice of drills, mental preparation of the skills involved, ensuring that the rider is properly nourished as to ensure that his or her body is capable of completing the demanding rigours that motocross can inflict, and physically capable of withstanding the forces inflicted on the body during the practice and competition of the sport.

Practicing must be approached in the correct manner in order to maximize effectiveness. Skill repetition is most often the most effective for of practice. For instance, if a rider is having trouble with a certain area of his or her riding it makes no sense to practice other aspects that they are more skilled at while ignoring the area that is lacking. A good motocross trainer will be able to recognize these weak areas and find a system that allows the rider to practice their weaker areas while still having fun so as not to get bored.

Exercising is an often overlooked area of becoming an effective rider as it is sometimes thought that the exercise of riding alone is enough to get the body in shape and keep it that way. While motocross or other forms of competitive motorcycle racing is truly indeed physically demanding, there is much to be desired in the way of physical conditioning. Most motocross riders are in decent cardiovascular shape because of the rigors of the sport but strength also plays a key role if on wishes to reach their greatest potential. The strength of the legs and core body are crucial in order to complete lap after lap at full potential speed. Middle weight exercises for higher than normal reps are the most effective exercise techniques for motocross or other forms of off-road motorcycle riding such as hare scrambles, cross country, desert racing, arenacross, supercross, and so forth. The most successful riders have adopted this theory and incorporate it into their training routing.

Nourishment is perhaps the newest trend shocking the racing community as it has become apparent that proper eating habits can be a major factor in the success of the rider. Some of the most successful nutrition advisors to pro riders are former bodybuilders and personal trainers because they have first hand experience with the effectiveness of food on performance.
