St Mary Abchurch is a Church of England church on Cannon Street in the City of London. It was built by Christopher Wren 1681–7 with a 4 storey, 51ft high tower, a leaded spire [ "London:the City Churches” Pevsner,N/Bradley,S New Haven, Yale, 1998 ISBN 0300096550] and a red brick exterior with stone dressings and tower with leaded spire [The City of London Churches Betjeman, J Andover, Pikin, 1967 ISBN 0853721122] . William Snow painted the dome's interior ["The Visitors Guide to the City of London Churches" Tucker,T: London, Friends of the City Churches, 2006 ISBN 0955394503] depicting worship in heaven, William Grey made the pulpit, and the door cases, a font cover, rails and Royal Arms are by William Emmett. Its grand altar-piece is by Grinling Gibbons ["The Old Churches of London" Cobb,G: London, Batsford, 1942] . and, although it suffered war damage in the Blitz, it was restored by Godfrey Allen. Also to be seen there are original high box pews on three sides of the church. The church's medieval predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666.
