Punjab is a region in the South Asia, divided into two parts Western Punjab (Pakistan) and Eastern Punjab (India). Punjabi music has a diverse style of music, ranging from Folk and Sufi to Classical, notably the Patiala gharana

However, it is musically best-known as the home of punjabi folk music, a lively folk dance music that evolved into a musical genre called Bhangra when it became imported into Western countries by Punjabi immigrants. Its important to note Bhangra music and punjabi folk music compete for the punjabi audience in Punjab and abroad. Whereas the emphasis in bhangra is on the music, in punjabi folk music, the emphasis is on the singer and the lyrics.
