However, due to the growing popularity and commercialization ofcell phones andinternet dial-up connections, the area code was split onJune 5 ,2000 with Westchester retaining 914, and the remaining counties receiving the new area code of 845.In addition to the aforementioned counties, 914 also carried the
Long Island counties of Nassau and Suffolk until the 516 area code was given to Long Island in 1951.Since 2004, a block of numbers used by MCI has also been used in the
