CJ Cheil Jedang (Hangul: 씨제이제일제당, CJ제일제당; KRX: 001041) is a South Korean corporation. It changed its name from Cheil Jedang to CJ in 2002, but CJ Corporation has divided the sugar industries and founded as CJ Cheil Jedang in 2007. [1]

It was originally part of Samsung group, but separated in the 1990s. Its main products have been processed foods and retail & distribution, most famous for sugar. However, it has recently moved into the entertainment industry, with creation of "CJ Entertainment". Notably, it has built the largest multiplex movie theater franchise in Korea, called CJ CGV.

CJ Corporation legally spun off from Samsung group in 1995, but the two keep very close ties to this day. The chairman of CJ is the grandson of the late Byul Chul Lee who was the chairman of the Samsung group.[2]

The chairman of CJ corporation since March 2002 is currently a man by the name of Jae Hyun Lee[3]. He was the one that has changed the name of CJ Cheil Jedang to CJ Corporation. His older sister Mi Kyoung Lee is the vice chairman of the company[4].

Its main business areas include foodstuffs, (comprising sugar, wheat, and oil), bio, (comprising MSG, lysine, etc.), processed food, animal feed, and pharmaceuticals. The entertainment sector has been spun off from the company in the early 2000s and is now a subsidiary of CJ Corporation.

They also sponsor the Starcraft Pro-gaming team, CJ Entus.

Starting from May of 2007, CJ Corporation has announced that they will be hiring more women in the company. They also announced that there will be doubling their allowance time for women who need to leave due to pregnancy [5] (Maternity Leave). Korean law requires women be allowed up to 90 days of maternity leave. [6] However, CJ Corporation has extended this time to one year.[7]

In 2007, CJ Corporation divided the Sugar industries, and the company has founded as CJ Cheil Jedang. CJ Recently reported in talks with US Corporation Dendreon who is in trials with cancer vaccine Provenge.[citation needed]
