Feteira (Horta)

Feteira is a parish in the southern part of the district of Horta and the island of Faial in the Azores. The population in 2001 is 1,612, its density is 110.3/km² and the area is 14.62 km². Feteira is located 5 km west of the city of Horta. Feteira is linked with a road linking Horta and the western part of the island and another road in higher elevations. Farmlands dominate the coast area while the mountain lies to the north and are covered with forests. The parish are made up of rivers and streams especially the long one for centuries for the survival of the local population and especially for the practice of agriculture. The parish has five bridges, São Pedro, Porceirão, Igreja, São Pedro at the lower part of the parish and Ponte Nova.

Economy

With 1,612 inhabitants, the main industry on the island are agriculture. Documents of 1886, gave the population annually producing sweet potatoes in ordering 200,000 kg. Later the orange and the lemon production gave the great importance, arrived to be exported to the foreigners. The corn and wheat were equally produced in large quantitades. Currently, it created a huge importance in cattle including cowns and lambs. The founding of a cooperation of dairy production created its importance of that activity. In all of Feteira exists a milk factory. Recently, banana plantations were created in Feteira creating a present local tradition.

Fishing and the paper industry were the primary importance of the economy of Feteiras for a long time. Its economic difficulties laong with its insatisfied politics saw its population trend heading downward in 1862. The payments of new contributions to the state - the new new taxes - had been in the base of the great plea.

Feteiras also has a school, a lyceum, churches, a nearby beach, a post office and a fewsquares ("praças")
