International College of the Cayman Islands

The International College of the Cayman Islands (ICCI) is a non-profit, private, four-year independent institution of higher education which opened in the fall of 1970. It is located in Newlands, Grand Cayman.

History

International College of the Cayman Islands is the outgrowth of a felt need by a small group of Caymanians and Americans to establish a private, independent institution of higher education in the Cayman Islands, since no other such institution existed in the islands. The need was initially expressed by Floris McField (nee McCoy), a Caymanian teacher. A founding committee was organized by Dr. J. Hugh Cummings of Portland, Oregon early in 1967. The committee worked for several years making plans for the organization and establishment of the college. In January 1968, the American Committee for the College of the Cayman Islands was formed to provide financial help for establishing a college in the Cayman Islands, later named International College of the Cayman Islands. The committee continues as a nonprofit organization to assist the college in publicity and finance. Initial land for the campus in Newlands was donated by the late Hon. James M. Bodden. An American Friends Service Committee volunteer work camp, during the Summer of 1969, began construction of Friends Hall, the first building for the college. Summer of 1970, an Operation Crossroads Africa volunteer work camp helped to complete construction on the building. Friends Hall was dedicated on January 23, 1971. Construction on the second building, Clayton Strain Residence Hall, was begun in January 1971, and opened for use in September 1971. Construction of the library began in the Summer of 1973; it was available for use in 1974. In January 1973, ICCI acquired the Sylvia Gill Secretarial College, and moved its facilities from George Town to the ICCI campus in Newlands.

In the Fall of 1975, International College of the Cayman Islands was chartered in the State of Florida as a degree-granting institution and authorized by the Florida State Board of Independent Colleges and Universities (now Commission for Independent Education), to offer courses of study leading to Associate and Bachelor's degrees. Classes and seminars were first offered through the Miami Center (now Miami Learning Site), in 1976. The college was accredited as a Senior College by the Accrediting Commission of the Association of Independent College and Schools, Washington, D.C. (now Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools), in August, 1979. In the Winter term, 1980, graduate studies leading to the Master of Science degree were inaugurated. In the Winter Term, 1993, the Master of Business Administration program began.

In January 2000, the founder of the college, Dr. J. Hugh Cummings, passed away. A memorial walk is held each year in February from the college campus, which was the birthplace of tertiary education in the Cayman Islands, to Pedro St. James Castle (http://www.pedrostjames.ky/), the birthplace of democracy in the Cayman Islands.

In September 2004 the college campus was destroyed when Hurricane Ivan, a category five hurricane, passed within a few miles of Grand Cayman devastating the Cayman Islands. All three campus buildings and the radio tower sustained damage and were unusable. The college resumed operations at St. Ignatius High School in George Town in November 2004 and continued to operate at that location through the end of the Fall Quarter 2005. In January 2006 the college returned to its original campus with two repaired and renovated buildings. The new Friends Hall Classroom building and the new Clayton Strain Hall opened for the Winter Quarter 2006. Location

International College of the Cayman Islands is located at 595 Hirst Road, Newlands, Grand Cayman in the Cayman Islands. The Cayman Islands consists of three islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Located in the Caribbean Sea south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica, Grand Cayman is the largest of the three. This Island is roughly 22 miles long from east to west with a maximum width of 8 miles. The population is approximately 45,000 though the islands draw between 2 and 2.5 Million visitors a year. These Islands are an English-speaking British dependent territory.

The campus of ICCI is located in the central part of Grand Cayman in the rural community of Newlands, approximately seven miles east of George Town.

Education Philosophy

The educational experience at International College of the Cayman Islands is based on the assumption that education is concerned with three broad areas: The students' understanding of themselves, their society, other societies, and the relationship between them; development of the students' personalities and potentials through exposure to a variety of positive educational experiences, philosophies and perspectives, so that they will have the maximum of freedom and resources in forming their own values; and training which will allow students to pursue their chosen vocations.ICCI espouses the belief that understanding and development depend on the students' perception of the relevance of their learning to themselves and their environment; that knowledge cannot be imposed, but is a dynamic process growing from the involvement of both teachers and students with problems and experiences which affect them. ICCI encourages participation by students and the people of the Cayman Islands in helping formulate college policy. The autonomy of each member of the college will be safeguarded.

International College of the Cayman Islands is founded on the belief that educational opportunities should be provided without regard to color, race, sex, handicap, creed, or national origin. ICCI does not discriminate on any of these bases in admittance, employment, financial assistance, or any other policies, programs or areas of the college.

Legal Control

The International College of the Cayman Islands is incorporated as a nonprofit guarantee company in the Cayman Islands to operate as a private, independent institution of higher education. It is also registered with and recognized by the Education Council of the Cayman Islands Government.

The college is incorporated in the State of Florida, U.S.A., as a nonprofit, degree-granting institution of higher education.

The school's property and buildings are held in the name of the college by a board of trustees. The board is responsible for the maintenance of college properties and formulates college policy.

Students

The student to faculty ratio at the International College of the Cayman Islands is 11:1. Most classes have about 15 students. Students come to ICCI from other Caribbean Islands and every continent in the world.

The student population in the Summer Quarter 2008 is made up of 142 students. There are 124 enrolled in undergraduate programs and 18 students enrolled in postgraduate programs.
