census GR|2 of 2000, there were 9,895 people, 4,069 households, and 2,726 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 21 people per square mile (8/km²). There were 4,434 housing units at an average density of 10 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.68% White, 0.17% Black or African American, 1.48% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 0.70% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 35.7% were of German, 24.8% Dutch and 14.3% Norwegian ancestry according toCensus 2000 .There were 4,069 households out of which 31.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.60% were married couples living together, 6.50% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.00% were non-families. 30.10% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.20% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.96.In the county the population was spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 24.60% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 21.30% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 92.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.40 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $31,909, and the median income for a family was $40,133. Males had a median income of $27,642 versus $20,759 for females. The
