census GR|2 of 2000, there were 5,941 people, 2,378 households, and 1,674 families residing in the county. Thepopulation density was 12 people per square mile (5/km²). There were 3,028 housing units at an average density of 6 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 96.60% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 1.35% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.03% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 28.1% were of American, 15.5% Irish, 15.0% German and 12.7% English ancestry according toCensus 2000 .There were 2,378 households out of which 30.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.40% were married couples living together, 8.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.60% were non-families. 26.70% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.60% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the county the population was spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 25.00% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $22,863, and the median income for a family was $28,506. Males had a median income of $25,568 versus $16,500 for females. The
