British fatalities during Operation Telic

British fatalities during Operation Telic

Since the start of operations in Iraq, 176 British service personnel have died (6 of them female) [ MOD 03/04/07 - Operations In Iraq: British Fatalaties [http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/FactSheets/OperationsFactsheets/OperationsInIraqBritishFatalities.htm] ] and many more have been wounded. Of the 176 fatalities, 136 personnel are classified as having been killed in hostile circumstances, with the remaining 40 losing their lives as a result of illness, accidents or suicide. The first casualties were sustained on 21 March 2003, with the bloodiest single day of the campaign being 30 January 2005 when a Royal Air Force C-130 Hercules transport aircraft was shot down between Baghdad and Balad, killing all 10 servicemen on-board. Full non-fatal casualty records are currently only available for the period after 01 January 2006. Since that date, 3,115 British personnel have been wounded, injured or fallen ill (315 wounded in action); 1,536 of whom required aeromedical evacuation [MOD - Operations in Iraq: British Casualties [http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/FactSheets/OperationsFactsheets/OperationsInIraqBritishCasualties.htm] ] . However, these totals are likely to rise significantly as and when full records for 2003 to 2006 become available.
