Barry Cooper (cricketer)

Barry George Cooper (born 30 November, 1958) in Whangarei) was a New Zealand cricketer who played 62 first-class matches for the Northern Districts Knights in the 1980s and in the 1990s and he played for Northland in the Hawke Cup.

A right-handed batsman, he scored 2982 runs at 28.13 in first class matches. The best of his four centuries, an unbeaten 116, came against the England tourists in 1988. He took 26 wickets with his off breaks, with his only five wicket haul, 5 for 40, coming against Otago.

Cooper scored 2009 runs in 80 list A one day matches with one century, 102 against Otago, for an average of 27.51. He took 34 one day wickets at 30.23 with a best of 3 for 12.

He also appeared for North Island (1981/82), Derbyshire Second XI (1980-1981), Derbyshire Under-25s (1981), Minor Associations (1982/83), Auckland and Northern Districts (1985/86) and Sir Ron Brierley's XI (1993/94).

His son Henry Cooper scored 180 against Dargaville in 2007, the highest score for the Whangarei Boys High School 1st XI ever. He also bowls leg spin, and has been selected for the Northern Districts Under 15 side, which won the New Zealand North Island tournament.

Barry is now found supporting and coaching cricket in Whangarei.
