Gesu School (pronEng|dʒeɪˈzuː) is a diverse Catholic elementary school in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo. It is part of Gesu Parish, which is named after the original Gesu Church in Rome which St. Ignatius Loyola began. It was originally founded by Jesuits, but it is now an Oblate parish. Gesu serves students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, who typically come from either Ottawa Hills or the Old Orchard neighborhood across from the University of Toledo campus. It is a Roman Catholic school affiliated to the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA). Gesu has 180 days of classes a year, and a typical school day is 6 hours long. History

*1920 - Bishop Schrembs assigned the boundaries of Gesu Parish in Toledo.
*1921 - The first classrooms of Gesu School were formed and administered by the Sisters of Notre Dame.
*1929 - Gesu School building was completed.
*1949 - The convent was completed.
*1950 - The Rectory was completed.
*1998 - The Sullivan Center was completed.
*2004 - The Oblates of St. Francis DeSales (OSFS) became the administrators of the parish.

Programs

Sports

Gesu-sponsored athletics are organized by the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), and include soccer, volleyball, football, cheerleading, baseball, softball, cross country, track and field, and basketball. To join the team, you must either go to Gesu School or belong to Gesu Parish.

Tutors

The school has special tutors for Speech, Learning disability, Math & Reading.

Extended day

There is an optional Extended Day before/after school for students whose parents work.

Field trips

All of the grades take infrequent field trips to area locations, including The Toledo Zoo, The Toledo Museum of Art, and the 6th grade 5-day trip to Camp Storer.

Other programs

Gesu has an Honors Choir and began producing yearly musicals in 2005. Gesu has a Quiz Bowl team that competes against other Toledo-area Catholic elementary schools. There are opportunities available for all students/parishioners to join Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts. Students also can use the TARTA bus service for transportation to and from school. Gesu also has Power of the Pen.
