Amateur Swimming Association

Amateur Swimming Association

The Amateur Swimming Association (the asa) is the English national governing body for swimming, diving, water polo, open water, and synchronised swimming. The asa's organisation and responsibilities overlap with those of British Swimming, a federation of the asa and its Scottish and Welsh siblings, which is responsible for elite swimming, including the Great Britain Olympic swimming, synchronised swimming, and diving teams. The asa is responsible for recreational swimming, and for the development of the competitive sport from starter levels up to the Commonwealth Games, at which the home nations compete separately.

The asa traces its history to the formation of an association of London swimming clubs in 1869. It adopted its current name in 1886 after a dispute over amateurism (a frequent source of conflict in English sport at the time). The asa's income for the 18 months to 31 March 2006 was £11.2 million, its largest sources of income being government grants (e.g. from Sport England) and revenue from its swimming award scheme.
