1934 inTularosa, New Mexico ) was the 38thTreasurer of the United States .Her father, a former
blacksmith , owned a small restaurant and dance hall. Ortega worked at the restaurant as a young child. While inhigh school and duringcollege , Ortega worked part time at the local bank. She earned her BA in business and economics with honors atEastern New Mexico University . In1968 , Ortega moved toLos Angeles where she became aCPA and joined the firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. She became the first woman president of a bank inCalifornia at Santa Ana State Bank. In1983 , she was appointed the 38th Treasurer of the United States and held that position until1989 . Known for her oratory skills, she was chosen to be thekeynote speaker at the1984 Republican National Convention . From1990 -1991 , she was appointed by President Bush to serve as an Alternate Representative to theUnited Nations General Assembly . She currently serves on the Board of Directors of TheKroger Company.References
