The Italian Liberal Party (AKA Libs) ("Partito Liberale Italiano", PLI) is a liberal Italian political party.

It was founded in December 2004 as successor of the late Italian Liberal Party and as an expansion of the short-lived Liberal Party. Stefano De Luca, former MEP for Forza Italia and leader of the Liberal Party, was elected secretary at the founding congress.

In March 2007 the party formed a federation with the Italian Republican Party, named Republicans, Liberals, Reformers. On 24 June the national congress of the party confirmed the alliance and affirmed its autonomy from the House of Freedoms. Stefano De Luca was unanimously re-elected secretary of the party.

During the Congress, some leading former Liberals joined the party: Carlo Scognamiglio Pasini (former President of the Senate for Forza Italia), Luigi Compagna (UDC Senator from 2001 to 2006) and Luciano Magnalbò (National Alliance Senator from 1996 to 2006). Since that time PLI is for the first time represented in a Regional Council by Antonietta Brancati, regional deputy of Lazio, previously member of Italy of Values. Another leading member of the new PLI is Renato Altissimo, who was secretary of PLI from 1986 to 1993.

In June 2007 De Luca and Martino, on behalf of the PLI, decided to join Daniele Capezzone's network Decide!, thus supporting its proposals and especially the introduction of the flat tax.

For the 2008 general election Liberals tried to form an electoral pact with the Union of Christian and Centre Democrats [ [http://www.partitoliberale.it/page1/files/94fe9a8485937c01237d4359085d7eb9-226.html La Segreteria Nazionale del PLI comunica quanto segue | Comunicati Stampa | Partito Liberale Italiano ] ] , but finally chose to run as a stand-alone list [ [http://www.partitoliberale.it/ Pli Partito Liberale Italiano ] ] . However in the election a member of PLI, Luigi Compagna, was elected to the Italian Parliament for The People of Freedom.

In May 2008 the party formed a federation with the Moderates for Piedmont. [http://www.partitoliberale.it/2008/05/28/comunicato-stampa-accordo-pli-moderati/] [http://www.partitoliberale.it/2008/05/28/accordo-politico-tra-il-pli-ed-il-movimento-%e2%80%9cmoderati%e2%80%9d/]
