Pelagio Galvani

Pelagio Galvani

Pelagio Galvani [Pelagio Galvão, Pelayo Gaytan, Pelagio di Santa Lucia, Pelagius of Albano, Pelagius of St Lucia, Pelagius Albanensis.] (b. ca. 1165, Guimaraes or Gusindos, León — d. 1230 or 1240, Montecassino) was a Portuguese or Leonese [Antonio García y García, ‘La canonística ibérica (1150–1250)en la investigación reciente’, Bulletin of Medieval Canon Law, 11 (1981), 41–75, at pp. 54–55] Benedictine, Cardinal, and canon lawyer. [http://faculty.cua.edu/Pennington/1140i-p.htm] He became a papal legate and leader of the Fifth Crusade.

He entered the Order of Benedictines in 1178 and studied theology in Paris. Pope Innocent III created him Cardinal-Deacon of S. Lucia in Septisolio in 1205 (or in March 1206). Later, he was promoted to the rank of Cardinal-Priest of S. Cecilia (between February 25 and May 31, 1211), and finally opted for the suburbicarian see of Albano in the spring of 1213. He was sent on a diplomatic mission to Constantinople in 1213. Dispatched by Pope Honorius III to lead the Fifth Crusade at Damietta in Egypt, he made a poor strategic decision in turning down peace offers made by Al-Kamil. He became dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals at the election to the papacy of Cardinal Ugolino Conti (Pope Gregory IX) on March 19 1227 [He was Cardinal-Bishop next to Ugolino Conti in the order of seniority.] . It is known that he died at Montecassino but the date of his death is uncertain and fluctuates in the sources between January 30, 1230 [Donovan, Pelagius and the fifth crusade, p. 115] and January 29, 1240 [Pius Bonifatius Gams," Series episcoporum Ecclesiae catholicae", p. XXII] . The last papal bull signed by him is dated January 26, 1230.
