Dr. Neil Faulkner is an archaeologist, historian, Editor of Military Times, Features Editor of the magazine Current Archaeology, a tour guide and a lecturer.[1]

Biography

Before becoming an archaeologist, Faulkner studied political economy at King's College, Cambridge and later became a teacher.[1] He subsequently earned his doctorate at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London, 'with a study of late Roman towns',[1] where he would later become an honorary lecturer.[2]

Faulkner has directed excavations at Sedgeford, in Norfolk.[1] As noted by the British Decorative and Fine Arts Society of Brussels (BRIDFAS), where Faulkner has lectured on 'Cities of Vesuvius', he 'is the author of numerous articles, academic papers, and several books'.[3] His works have centred on ancient civilisations and archaeology, including, The Decline and Fall of Roman Britain, Apocalypse: The Great Jewish Revolt Against Rome AD 66-73 and Hidden Treasure: Digging up the Past (with Miranda Krestovnikoff).[1]

He was made a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London in 2008.[4]

A former member of the Socialist Workers Party, he describes himself as "a Marxist, a revolutionary socialist, an anti-capitalist political activist" and is a member of the Editorial Board of Counterfire.[5] He has written for International Socialism, a quarterly journal of socialist theory, on subjects such as 'Practising Marxist archaeology'.[6]

Faulkner is the editor of Military Times, a military history magazine launched in October 2010. The magazine is published by Current Publishing and the Chelsea Magazine Company. According to his editorial welcome, 'The aim is not only to bring you action-packed narrative, but to provide all the technical detail, in-depth analysis, and cutting-edge controversy you need to understand not just what happened, but also why'.[7]

Faulkner also contributes to many other publications, including History Today, who published his article on 'Hadrian and the Limits of Empire' in July 2008.[8] Faulkner's 2010 article on Lawrence of Arabia was featured in The Independent.[9] Faulkner is co-director of the Great Arab Revolt Project. His authority on the subject is noted by the administrator of the project Susan Daniels, on the Past Horizons archaeology website.[10] Faulkner has written for Counterfire on subjects ranging from the student revolts of 2010[11] to his serialised 'Marxist History of the World'.[12] He has also written for the BBC, on 'Romanisation', and Roman Britain, 43-410 AD.[13]
