Ho-Kwang Mao

Ho-Kwang (Dave) Mao (born June 18, 1941) is a staff scientist at the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution for Science.

He is one of the most prolific users of the diamond anvil cell for research at high pressures. Although at the time the claim was controversial [The Diamond Makers, R.M.Hazen, Cambridge Univ Press (1999), ISBN 0-521 654754 2] , his work with Peter M Bell [H.K.Mao and P.M.Bell,Science 191 851-852 (1976)] is now generally accepted as being the first verified static pressure in excess of 1 Megabar. In 2005 he was awarded the Gregori Aminoff Prize by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
