Anglican Portal St Mary Axe [The derivation came from the axes used by its patrons the The Skinners Company . "A Survey of London, Vol I" Stow,J p446 : Originally 1598- this edn,London, A.Fullarton & Co,1890 ] , sometimes referred to as "St Mary Pellipar" [ [http://www.hrionline.ac.uk/strype/TransformServlet?page=book2_086 So called by Stype] ] , was a mediaeval church in the City of London whose full name was "St Mary, St Ursula and her 11,000 virgins" [ [http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=gLEtmA5t-t8C&pg=PA49&lpg=PA49&dq=%22church+of+St+Mary+Axe%22&source=web&ots=sH24w4qNP7&sig=e_Ge0XTNvBu0sYvKPA8w-Eb73JQ&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=2&ct=result Full name] ] situated just north of Leadenhall Street. First mentioned as "St. Mary apud Ax" ["A Dictionary of London" Harben,H: London, Herbert Jenkins, 1918] , it belonged for a time to the "Priory of St Helen’s". At the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries it was still extant but in decline, and in 1562 it was offered to Spanish Protestant refugees as a place of worship [“The Old Churches of London” Cobb,G: London, Batsford, 1942] . Three years later, however, it was unused and in a state of disrepair. Shortly afterwards it was pulled down and the parish united to that of St Andrew Undershaft [ [http://www.ourpasthistory.com/England/st-andrew-undershaft Our past history] ]
