Korn (liquor)

Korn (liquor)

Korn, a kind of a German spirit (schnapps) made from wheat or rye and barley malt. Usually drunk neat, sometimes added to Berliner WeisseFact|date=October 2007 and is seldom also enjoyed mixed with soft drinks.

Korn is very popular in Germany, especially in the northern part. In some regions a beer is always ordered together with a "Kurzen" ("short one", informal German for Schnapps). There are a few very popular brands of Korn in Germany, for example Nordhäuser Korn, Fürst Bismarck, Dornkaat or Strothmann. Korn is generally the cheapest kind of distilled spirit available in Germany, which has given it a somewhat dubious reputation. Traditional Korn has about 32 % alcohol by volume (64° proof), while "Doppelkorn" (double Korn) has at least 38 % (76 proof). A weaker variety of Korn with less than 30 % alcohol by volume is sold under the name "Klarer".

Korn differs from Vodka by less rigorous filtering, which leaves more of the cereal taste in the finished spirit.
