German Wallace College

German Wallace College

German Wallace College was a German Methodist institution of higher education in Berea, Ohio. It was organized 7 June 1864. The Rev. Jacob Rothweiler of the Central German Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (and a professor at Baldwin University) was appointed 3 June 1863 to inaugurate the movement to establish this college.

Mr. John Baldwin presented the so-called Baldwin Hall and considerable land to begin this college. German Wallace was established very near Baldwin University. The two institutions worked harmoniously together from the start. For instance, the students from either were entitled to all the privileges of the others. Indeed, the two colleges ultimately merged, to form Baldwin Wallace College.

The Rev. William Nast, D.D., was for many years the "Honorary President" of the college. Early "de facto" presidents included the Rev. Jacob Rothweiler, the Rev. Frederick Schuler, and P.F. Schneider.
