Choremi

Choremi (Greek: Χωρέμη) is a Greek settlement located around 10 km souhtwest (old: 5 km) from Megalopoli as about 4 km northwest from the nearest interchange with the GR-7/E65 (Kalamata - Megalopoli - Tripoli) or the old road. Choremi is also in the municipal district of Choremi and the municipality of Megalopoli. Choremi is connected with a road linking The GR-7 west-northwest of Veligotsi and Vasta. The Megalopolis mine which produces electricity to Southern Greece is 1 km directly to the east

Geography

Choremi is situated less than 500 m west of one of the Peloponnese's major river, the Alfeios (Alpheus) it used to be about 1.5 km until the late-1970s. The geography consists of farmlands that now covers the central part, the western part are forested, and the eastern part of what was farmlands is now a large mine that produces electricity to its nearby Megalopoli Power Plant on the other side. The Lykaio mountain lies to the west, hills dominates the western portion. Choremi formerly served 2 km northwest of the Greek National Road 7 in which it was to be moved 5 km to the southeast due to a giant lignite mine which is situated to the east and the new section of the Alfeios River which removed 3 to 4 km of the old highway.

History

The highest recorded population were in the early to mid-20th century, the population has been falling since the mid-20th century, particularly after the two conflicts, the World War II and the Greek Civil War as people went for a better livestyle and jobs elsewhere in Greece and the other parts of the world (mainly North America), its decline has rarely slowed in the late-20th century. The census between 1991 and 2001 saw a sharp decline that it nearly reduced the population by half, its median age will rise above 50 and 60, the younger generation only visit Apiditsa making it a summer area along with Choremi and the area.

Other than the population growth, years after the construction of a power plant which produces electricity to southern Greece, the Alfeios River was relocated 1 km to the southwest, mining began in the northern part, later, the GR-7 was relocated 5 km to the southeast in the 1980s as mining extended southward and it had a link with the town. The road that connects with the town was also reconstructed to 1 km west.

On Sunday August 26, 2007, speedy winds and high temperatures brought a phenomenal fire to the village as the largest forest fire ever recorded in Greek history spreade from nearby Chroussa and burnt many trees and forests to the southwest and northeast. Some of the buildings were damaged. Residents were scared and also battled the blaze along with firefighters, choppers and airplanes during the afternoon hours and sprayed for several hours. Flames later spread into nearby Apiditsa and Tripotamo but disintegrated by airplanes and cooler temperatures.

Choremi has a church, and a square ("plateia"), its nearest school and lyceum (middle school) and gymnasium (secondary school) are in Isari, Paradeisia and Megalopoli.
