Drayton Island

Drayton Island is a privately owned heavily wooded island at the northern end of Lake George on the west side of the Saint Johns River's main channel in Putnam County, Florida, United States.[1]

The island is located across the river from a marina in Georgetown, Florida. A small public ferry, one of three left on the river, holds two cars at a time and services the small island's population.[2][3]

History

The island was a plantation when William Drayton, an immigrant from South Carolina, bought it along with other properties in Florida. The Ferry is currently run by Edward Babbitt as it has been since its first voyage across the river with Babbitt's grandfather as captain in 1943.[4]
