De La Salle Humanities College is a boys' voluntary aided school under the trusteeship of the De La Salle Brothers and maintained by the Liverpool Education Authority. De La Salle is a sixth form entry Catholic comprehensive school catering for boys from the age of 11 to 18. The school is named after St John Baptist De La Salle who is patron saint of all those who work in education. It offers an education based on gospel values so enabling young people to reach their full potential and to enjoy the freedom a sound education can give them as full human beings committed to Christ.

St. John Baptist

John Baptist De La Salle was the first son of wealthy parents living in France. He became a priest at the age of 27 and took on the responsibility of providing education for the poor, giving much of his own wealth in the process. John opened a free school for the poor, and he and his colleagues took the name Brothers of the Christian Schools, now generally known as the De La Salle Brothers. He died in 1719, but 181 years later John Baptist De La Salle was canonised as a saint. In 1950, because of his work as well as his inspirational writing, he was made the Patron Saint of all those who worked in education. At present De la Salle schools can be found in a dozen other places in Britain along with some 85 different countries around the world.

Future: 2010 onwards

The future for the school will involve a huge change due to the 2007/08 strategic review of secondary school places in the Liverpool Authority Area. The Building Schools for the Future initiative and declining numbers of children forced a review of provision in the Liverpool area, and a special review of the Croxteth area led to a conclusion that one of the three secondary schools in Croxteth would have to close.

The preferred plan is to close Croxteth Comprehensive school, transferring provision to St. John Bosco school for Girls and a new £20m Academy [ [http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2008/06/10/20m-dream-for-a-school-of-the-future-100252-21047533/ New £20m Academy] ] to replace De La Salle.

Public consultation has revealed that the new Academy will be secular in designation, which has met fierce resistance from many parents who believe that Croxteth continues to require Roman Catholic provision.

Further consultation, including a 3,500 signature petition, has brought to light the fact that many Croxteth and Norris Green parents and children would prefer a non-denominational community school to be built on the Croxteth Comprehensive site as outlined in the Alt Valley vision. Many also believe that merging De La Salle and St John Bosco schools represents the best option to cater for all members of the community and answer the difficult question of providing community cohesion.

The final decision for the Croxteth schools, following consultation, is scheduled to be announced before the end of 2008.
