Club career

McBreen was born in Burnley, Lancashire, England but moved to Australia six weeks later after his father took up an offer to play football there.[2] He was raised in Newcastle, New South Wales and played for Edgeworth Eagles before earning a full-time contract with Newcastle United of the National Soccer League in 2000.[2][3] He signed for FC Universitatea Craiova on a long-term contact in 2002, although he later said the move was "a bad mistake".[2] He walked out on the club in 2004 after they refused to honour his contractual obligations.[4] He signed for Falkirk in the Scottish First Division after receiving international clearance in September 2004.[5] He signed a new one-year contract with the club in June 2005.[6]

He signed for League One team Scunthorpe United on a two-year contract on a free transfer in August 2006.[7] At the end of the 2006–07 season, McBreen was told by Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins that he was free to look for a deal with another club, despite having a year remaining on his contract.[8] He joined Conference National team York City on a one-month loan, with the option of a possible extension, on 5 October 2007.[9] His York debut came in a 4–1 defeat against Histon and scored his first goal in the following game against Stafford Rangers, which was the second goal in a 2–0 victory.[10][11] After making five appearances and scoring two goals he was recalled from his loan spell by Scunthorpe on 5 November due to the departure of on-loan Millwall striker Ben May.[12][13] Despite this, York manager Billy McEwan was interested in bringing McBreen back to the club for another loan spell.[14]

He joined St. Johnstone in January 2008 on a deal until the end of the season on a permanent deal; not a loan, as previously thought.[15] On 20 April, McBreen scored the opening goal in St. Johnstone's Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers of the Scottish Premier League at Hampden Park in extra time, which they eventually lost in a penalty shootout.[16] He was released by the club at the end of the 2007–08 season.[17] He held talks with A-League side Adelaide United and was later handed a trial with Wellington Phoenix,[18][19] but he returned to York City on 25 June.[20] His first game back at the club resulted in a 1–0 victory against Crawley Town and in his third appearance he scored his first goal of the 2008–09 season with the equalising goal in a 1–1 draw against Histon.[21][22] He suffered from a sore knee after waking up on 24 August, which led to him missing York's game against Barrow the following day.[23] He eventually made his return three days later by starting in the 1–1 draw against Torquay United.[24] McBreen was played primarily as a lone striker in away matches during the season, a decision which York manager Colin Walker defended in September.[25]

He was reported to have signed for A-League newcomers North Queensland Fury on 17 February 2009,[26] but the deal had yet to be confirmed by York.[27] It was confirmed that he would join the Fury at the start of the 2009–10 season in August, following the expiry of his contract at York in June.[28] He started in the FA Trophy Final at Wembley Stadium on 9 May 2009, which York lost 2–0 to Stevenage Borough.[29] He was released by York following the end of the 2008–09 season,[30] during which he made 48 appearances and scored 10 goals.[31]

He went on to sign a two-year pre-contract with A-League opponents Central Coast Mariners, for the 2010–11 season and 2011–12 seasons.[32] On 12 January 2010, McBreen signed an interim deal with Perth Glory for the remainder of the 2009–10 season in a swap for Jimmy Downey.[33]

International career

Australia coach Pim Verbeek selected McBreen in an extended squad of 25 players for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Indonesia in Brisbane on 3 March 2010.[34]
