Eduard Vinokurov

Eduard Teodorovich Vinokurov ( _ru. Эдуард Теодорович Винокуров; born October 30, 1942, in the village of Baizhansai, South Kazakhstan Province, Kazakh SSR) [ru icon [http://www.rusfencing.ru/history.php?act=&txt_id=1789 Profile at the Russian Fencing Federation] ] was a Soviet Russian sabre fencer.

Fencing career

World Championships

A member of the USSR National sabre team since 1966, Vinokurov won the gold medal in the team competition at the World Championships in 1967, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1974, and 1975.

Olympic career

Vinokurov competed in the team sabre event for the Soviet Union in three straight Olympiads, winning 3 medals.

At the 1968 Mexico City Games, he and his Soviet teammates captured the gold medal. Vinsokurov returned to the Olympics at the 1972 Munich Games, where the Soviets were expected to win the gold medal again. After dispatching Italy in the qualifying round (9-7), they defeated West Germany (9-4) to advance to the finals. The Soviets then defeated Hungary, 9-7, but in their final bout, lost a rematch to Italy (5-9), and were awarded the silver medal.

Vinokurov and his Soviet team did capture the gold medal at the next Olympiad, the 1976 Montreal Games.

One of Vinokurov's teammates in 1968 and 1972 was International Jewish Sports Hall of Famer Mark Rakita.

Hall of Fame
