"Hawaii" is a United States television series produced and distributed by NBC Universal Television for the NBC television network. Originally titled "Pearl City", this police drama was produced with the series "Hawaii Five-O" in mind, and debuted on August 31, 2004. Written by Executive Producer Jeff Eastin of "True Lies 2" and "Rush Hour 3" movie fame, the series revolves around a fictional elite crime unit of the Honolulu Police Department headed by veteran detective and local legend Sean Harrison (played by Michael Biehn of "The Rock", "Aliens", "The Terminator" movie fame) and John Declan (played by Sharif Atkins of "ER" television fame), a former Chicago Police Department detective transferred to the state of Hawaii for his talents.

The series is considered one of the most ambitious projects in the history of the Hawaii State Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism's Hawaii Film Office, desperate to repeat the economic prosperity once gained and driven by the CBS television series such as "Hawaii Five-O" and "Magnum, p.i." for the state's tourism industry.

The series was cancelled in October 2004. Although eight episodes were filmed, only seven actually aired.

Although the series had consultants from Hawaii to oversee the series production, the show was criticized on showing the more scenic aspects of Hawaii and not going into details about the grittier side of it. It was also criticized for keeping much of the negative stereotypes of native Hawaiians that have been seen in other shows filmed in Hawaii in the past. Finally, many Native Hawaiian and Asian American viewers objected to the fact that the show had fewer Native Hawaiians and/or Asian Americans on the regular cast than "Hawaii Five-O", which premiered on CBS in 1968.
