The Compound

The Compound

The Compound is an area in southwestern Palm Bay, similar to Flagler Estates. It is largely undeveloped area of some 200 miles of paved road. General Development Corporation began development of the area in the 1980s, but went bankrupt in 1991: afterwards, few residents ever moved in, and the streets fell into serious disrepair by the mid-2000s.

Geography

The Compound is located at coord|27|56|08|N|80|42|11|W|display=inline,title. The area of The Compound is 12 square miles. To the west is the St. Johns River, To the southeast is Deer Run, To the east is Bayside Lakes, and to the north is Palm Bay Regional Park. The average elevation is 23 feet above sea level.

Exploring The Compound

The Compound can be reached by taking Jupiter Blvd. toward De Groodt Rd, then going south and making a right onto Bombardier Blvd right where Bayside High School is located. The eastern terminus of The Compound is where Bombardier curves to the left.

While in The Compound, it is inadvisable to stray too far from Bombardier since the roads are unmarked. There are also no street lights in the area. It is highly recommended that a GPS unit be used while inside The Compound. Most GPS units/software have road data for the area available. High levels of criminal activity have been reported in the area. While it is a remote area, police routinely patrol The Compound due to the region being a popular off-roading site (this despite an ordinance banning such activities).

Paintball

This section of Palm Bay is also home to the first city run paintball park known as Hurrican Paintball Park. The park has suffered several closers due to ineffective management, a failed attempt at sub-contracting and budget issues.The park has been re-contracted under the name Invincibles Paintball [http://invinciblespaintball.com/]
