The Russo-Turkish War of 1710–1711 was the southernmost theatre of the
Great Northern War between Sweden and many of its neighbors.The war between
Russia and theOttoman Empire erupted after the Russians had defeated Sweden in theBattle of Poltava . With help from the Austrian and Frenchdiplomat s, the woundedCharles XII of Sweden escaped from the battlefield to the court of the Ottoman SultanAhmed III , whom he persuaded to declare war on Russia onNovember 20 ,1710 .The main event of the conflict was the ill-prepared Prut Campaign of 1711, during which Russian troops under command of
Boris Sheremetev attempted to invadeMoldavia with the aid of Moldavian rulerDimitrie Cantemir but were defeated by the Ottoman troops underGrand Vizier Baltacı Mehmet Paşa , in a decisive battle atStănileşti (started onJuly 18 ,1711 ).The conflict was ended on
July 21 by the "Treaty of the Pruth", to the disappointment of Charles XII. The Treaty stipulated to returnAzov to the Ottomans,Taganrog and several Russian fortresses were to be demolished, while the Tsar pledged to stop interfering into the affairs of thePolish-Lithuanian Commonwealth .
